Thirteenth Media Awards ‘Valya Krushkina – Journalism for the People’
The Valya Krushkina Fund at the Workshop for Civic Initiatives Foundation presented the thirteenth media awards “Valya Krushkina – Journalism for the People”. The names of the winners were announced at an official ceremony held on December 16 in Sofia. The awards were presented in the four categories of the competition: writing journalist, journalist from electronic media, aspiring new journalist and photojournalist. As with every edition of the competition, BFPA supports the initiative. We are extremely happy and grateful that this year the British Council has joined the supporting partners.

A total of 53 nominations and 127 journalistic materials were received and evaluated by a seven-member independent jury. In the category “Writing Journalist” the first place was awarded to Yoan Zapryanov, “Capital”. The award is for the material: “Vetrinska People’s Republic: “Historical Park” is getting armed”. The first place in the category “Journalist from Electronic Media” was awarded to Marieta Nikolaeva, Nova Broadcasting Group. The award is for the material “(Non)Immaculate Conception”.






The “Aspiring New Journalist” prize was awarded to Anina Santova, Capital for the article “Bulgaria borders on Amchi Chakaryan to the north” and Katerina Vassileva, Free Europe – for the article “A mother keeps her children locked up for years, and the institutions knew”. Safowan Al Kurdi, Nova Broadcasting Group is this year’s winner in the category “Photojournalist”. The award is for the report “Stories from Islamic Schools”. Traditionally, the Grand Prix was awarded in the name of Valya. This year it went to Maria Vankova, BTV Media Group. The award is for the material “Medicine at any price – 4 years later”.

The awards “Valya Krushkina – Journalism for the People” are held for the thirteenth consecutive year and distinguish the worthy journalists in our country who have proven their courageous position defended in the name of the citizens. In the previous 12 editions of the competition, more than 520 journalists with more than 1200 materials have been nominated. Since a long time, the competition has become a benchmark for quality journalism, courage and a dignified civic position. We are very happy and proud to be a part of this!
